The British love affair with afternoon tea can be traced all the way back to the 1800’s where it is believed the Duchess of Bedford took afternoon light refreshment to bridge the gap between breakfast and dinner. This was taken in her bedroom at Woburn Abbey. So satisfying was the habit the Duchess would later invite friends to share her ritual. So appealing was the experience that it is now engrained within the British culture and an industry has been born through its evolution. Afternoon tea has become a truly unique and iconic experience.
The longevity of afternoon tea is more than likely due to the way one can capture the imagination with the multitude of ways one can personalise the experience. Through endless food combinations and the style in which they are displayed and served. Perhaps this can also be attributed to its timing. As the industrial revolution was well under way new production methods incorporating state of the art machinery and the use of chemicals dramatically changed the way in which manufacturing progressed. Birmingham would soon become the workshop of the world. The result of which would create greater social and economic freedom.
Heritage Collection is at the heart of Birmingham’s rich innovative heritage dating back over 100 years. Birmingham was ‘the city’ for the manufacture of silver plated items of the finest quality. George Richards Elkington patented the first commercial process of electroplating and by 1880 his company Elkington & Co had up to 1000 employees working in Birmingham. To this day Heritage Collection still uses this very process to silver plate its items. Think Tank in Birmingham has a floor with examples of Birmingham’s manufacturing Heritage.
Many of our old dies and patterns date back to this period and still form part of the tools of our trade.
