The Grand Hotel Birmingham

Birmingham’s Grand Hotel has reopened for the first time in nearly 20 years following a stunning £45million restoration. Heritage provided tableware perfectly aligned with the hotel’s glamourous aesthetic…

Birmingham’s Grand Hotel is a jewel in the crown of the city’s architecture. Built-in the French Renaissance style, its sumptuous interiors have been lovingly restored to their former glory thanks to a £45 million investment. The grade II listed building has undergone a substantial restoration. The opulent interiors are in a Victorian style with a nod to Art Deco, showcasing the impressive grandeur of one of Birmingham’s most iconic buildings.

Guests are able to stay in one of the hotel’s 185 guest rooms and suites, which include a new penthouse suite with spectacular views across St Phillip’s Cathedral and beyond. The hotel also boasts a stunning grand staircase and a ‘secret’ garden terrace in the central courtyard.

Peter Kienast, the hotel’s General Manager is quoted by Birmingham Live as saying: “We’re looking forward to providing visitors to Birmingham – and locals alike – with a truly one-of-a-kind destination that combines the splendour and heritage of this landmark building with the energy and vibrancy of 21st century Birmingham.”

The hotel features 2 restaurants; Madeleine is a glamourous cocktail bar and lounge that brings a slice of Parisian chic to Colmore Row. It’s undoubtedly one of the city’s most glamorous destinations for those who wish to enjoy a cocktail in chic surroundings. Isaac’s (a nod to Isaac Horton, the visionary who commissioned the hotel in 1879,) is a New-York style brasserie that aims to combine the buzz of ‘The Big Apple’ with the warm spirit of Birmingham.

We worked with the Grand Hotel’s team to create tableware for both Isaac’s and Madeleine. Peter Kienast said of the collaboration: “Birmingham was once a hub of traditional tableware manufacturing and we are fortunate that we operate in a city with such a vast culture and history, spanning hundreds of years. We sought to work with a local manufacturer who shared our ethos for quality and tradition. Heritage Collection ticked all the boxes, and their services were unrivaled. From beginning to end they provided valued input and produced outstanding designs. We were impressed with the team’s dedication, professionalism, and penchant for detail.”

The Heritage Collection team aimed to create a suite of tabletop items that were perfectly tailored to highlight and complement the overall project vision. We produced a beautiful afternoon tea set with silver-plated tea stands to reflect the luxurious Parisian surroundings of Madeleine and durable, yet elegant cutlery and crockery for Isaac’s.

“We are proud and excited to be working with the Grand Hotel on this momentous occasion. The Hotel is an architectural icon in Birmingham’s landscape and will be a welcome addition to our city’s rich hospitality scene.” Stated Martin McDonagh, Chairman of Heritage. “We produced unique designs for the cutlery and china for both of the hotel’s restaurants. Peter and the team visited our factory and briefed us on their vision, we were able to draw from our wealth of relevant experience to deliver a winning tableware solution. It has been a pleasure working with The Grand Hotel and being a part of the restoration of one of the city’s iconic buildings.”

Heritage was particularly proud and honoured to be involved in this prestigious project, given its location in their hometown of Birmingham. The Heritage production facility, where we designed and developed the custom-made cutlery and crockery for the project, is located less than 2 miles from the city centre.
